Rice Yield and Lodging Control
Same paddy, same variety and identical management - only the nutrition programme differs. The trial plot produced larger panicles, stronger stems with no lodging and even ripening.
Key metrics
| Metric | Control (conventional) | Trial (Triargo programme) |
|---|---|---|
| Yield per mu | ~ 480 kg | ~ 610 kg |
| Seed set rate | 82% | 91% |
| Lodged area | 18% | 5% |
| Grains per panicle | 98 | 121 |
Trial conditions
The trial was run in the Dingcheng District green-control demonstration area in Changde, Hunan. Paddy soil with pH 5.8, 2.6% organic matter, 105 mg/kg available N and 118 mg/kg available K. Variety Longliangyou 534 transplanted on 12 May at 12,000 hills per mu, with 812 mm rainfall and 7 days of cool cloudy weather during grain filling.
Application programmes
Control (conventional)
Control: local conventional programme - 30 kg/mu compound 15-15-15 as base, 18 kg/mu urea at tillering, 6 kg/mu potassium chloride at panicle stage.
Trial (Triargo programme)
Trial: 800 kg/mu bio-organic fertiliser plus 25 kg/mu balanced compound as base, 20 kg/mu high-nitrogen compound at tillering, 13 kg/mu high-potassium water-soluble 12-6-40 at panicle initiation, and 100 g/mu foliar potassium (1:500) during grain filling.
Conclusions and advice
The trial averaged 610 kg per mu, 27.1% above control. Seed set rose from 82% to 91% with 23 more grains per panicle, lodged area fell from 18% to 5%, and fertiliser cost dropped about 13%, adding roughly 140 RMB per mu. Conclusion: the light-early heavy-late rhythm markedly improves lodging and empty grain, with panicle-stage potassium being the decisive driver. For varieties or fields with high lodging risk, control nitrogen strictly at tillering and raise the panicle-stage share to 30-35% of total nitrogen.
The trial plot applied high-potassium water-soluble fertiliser at panicle stage, markedly improving lodging resistance.
